IFS JUNE 2017 – With Olympic berths on the line, skaters brought their A-games to the 2017 World Championships in Helsinki, Finland. Though many rose to the challenge — rewriting history, setting new World records and achieving personal bests — others crumbled under the pressure.

Canada captured three medals; Japan, China and Russia claimed two; and three single medals went to France, Germany and the U.S.

There was no doubt that Russia’s Evgenia Medvedeva would once again land on top of the podium, but few expected that two Canadian ladies would leap onto the second and third steps. In the free skate, Medvedeva left them no room for error, reeling off seven triple jumps, including two difficult combinations, not missing a beat as she flew through her routine.

Medvedeva captured her second consecutive global title with World record scores, but it was Kaetlyn Osmond and Gabrielle Daleman — second and third, respectively — who stole the show, making history in Helsinki. Never before had two Canadian ladies stood on the same World podium.

Meryl Davis and Charlie White are hanging up their competitive skates. In a partnership that has spanned more than two decades the American ice dance duo has won it all.

It was not the plan Stéphane Lambiel had envisioned for himself. The two- time World champion and 2006 Olympic silver medalist had always believed his future lay in choreography, not in the realm of coaching.
