The 2020 Cup of Russia series will play out on five stages starting in mid-September. The Russian Figure Skating Federation has assigned each of the 2020-2021 national team members to two of the five events.
The originally published Russian federation guidelines, stipulated that only those athletes who take part in two stages of the 2020 Cup of Russia (under the Master of Sports program) will be eligible to compete for a place at the 2021 Russian Championships, and those places will be determined by the highest scores. That position has since been re-evaluated given the current situation with COVID-19, and the fact that some of the nation′s top athletes have dealt with and/or are still recovering from injuries or the virus over the past few months.
Junior national team members who are age eligible and earn the required number of points at two stages of the 2020 Cup of Russia will also be earn a place at senior nationals in Chelyabinsk Dec. 23-27. (See: Russia Institutes New Strategy)
STAGE V – MOSCOW – Dec. 5-8
The fifth and final competition of the series, is the final opportunity for skaters to earn a berth at the 2021 national championships in December. This event will be held without spectators.
Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov have withdrawn. Tarasova contracted pneumonia after the fourth stage in Kazan and the team only returned to training on Nov. 30. Aleksandra Boikova and Dmitrii Kozlovskii are out due to one of them having caught a cold. Dmitri Aliev, Alena Kostornaia and Elizaveta Tuktamysheva are also out after all three tested positive for the coronavirus. Alexei Mishin’s students Mikhail Kolyada and Anastasia Guliakova have withdrawn as a precaution. Kolyada was filmed working on both the quad Lutz and Salchow in practice earlier this week.
Victoria Sinitsina and Nikita Katsalapov are also out — both are suffering with fevers. Tiffani Zahorski and Jonathan Guerreiro withdrew — he is suffering from a bad cold. Evgenia Medvedeva and Alexandra Stepanova and Ivan Bukin are still recovering from the coronavirus and will not compete.

The fourth competition of the five-event series takes place in the ancient city of Kazan, the capital of the Republic of Tartarstan. A limited number of spectators will be permitted to attend.
This will be one of two final opportunities for a number of skaters who hope to have a shot at earning a place at the Russian Championships in December. The situation is not so intense for the national team members who have been unable to compete so far, such as the pairs team of Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov who were sidelined after he contracted COVID-19. Now healthy and back training, the duo is slated to make their season debut in Kazan.
In a recent interview Maxim Trankov said he had spoken with the federation about his team′s participation at the national championships. ″Force majeure has occurred in connection with the coronavirus pandemic. That will be taken into account for the first members of the national team. If the European champion Kozlovskii fell ill with the coronavirus and cannot perform at one of the stages, why should he miss the Russian Championships because of this?
″The federation has made some adjustments. Probably, initially it was not thought out correctly. Options had to be considered. It hit us the hardest. Because I had to force things, we returned to Russia, he got sick with the coronavirus … All this could have been avoided if there were other options.″
Trankov said that he ″can now see the sparkle in their eyes. Vova has a minor hand injury, but I hope the black streak is behind us and we can already start this season.″
Ice dancers Alexandra Stepanova and Ivan Bukin and Sofia Shevchenko and Igor Eremenko were scheduled to compete in Kazan but have been removed from the line up. On Nov. 2, the Russian federation issued a press release stating that one of their coaches has contracted COVID-19 and everyone in the group is now in quarantine.
The pairs teams of Aleksandra Boikova and Dmitrii Kozlovskii and Anastasia Mishina and Aleksandr Galliamov are set to make their season debuts in Kazan after being sidelined for various reasons.

STAGE III – SOCHI – Oct. 23-27

The third event of this exciting series takes place in the 2014 Olympic village of Sochi in the Krasnodar region. The venue for this competition will not be the Iceberg Palace, but a rink in close proximity to it. This event takes place at the same time as Skate America and the Gran Premio Italia 2020.
At this time, only skaters on the national team have been confirmed with full line-ups announced in the coming days. Aleksandra Boilkova and Dmitrii Kozlovskii are out after he tested positive for COVID-19 prior to leaving for Sochi. Victoria Sinitsina and Nikita Katsalapov have also withdrawn. Sinitsina is suffering from a nagging knee injury that forced the team to withdraw during the free dance at the second stop in Moscow. Doctors in Germany subsequently confirmed she has an inflammation of the knee tendon.
Alexei Mishin took his students to Novorgorsk to prepare for this competition in advance of going to Sochi. News reports quote Mishin confirming all his students tested negative for the virus at a pre-competition screening.
No spectators will be permitted to attend this event, but screens are being installed in the arena, on which photos and videos of fans with posters will be displayed.

Stage II – MOSCOW – Oct. 10-13

Medvedeva has withdrawn due to a recurring back problem. The Russian federation reported she has been hospitalized and will undergo a medical examination. In an Instagram post, Medvedeva explained that “old back problems made themselves felt at the most inopportune moment. I hoped that the injections would help dull the pain, but to no avail. You need to fight the cause, not the effect. In no case do I want to let anyone down. I will have to miss the next stage of the Russian Cup in Moscow. But we will do our best to prepare for other competitions. The season is still in full swing. Everything will be fine.“
Anastasia Mishina and Aleksandr Galliamov also withdrew after he tested positive for COVID-19. Elizaveta Nugumanova is also out after suffering a broken leg. According to the Russian press, she tripped on a sidewalk and twisted her ankle a month ago. While she felt a sharp pain she was still able to walk. Eventually, she went to a doctor who told her she had a fracture but it had healed. She is still feeling discomfort and has opted not to compete at the Moscow stop.
Artur Danielian has withdrawn. He has been dealing with an ongoing injury for many months, which is not fully healed.
A ceremony will take place after the pairs short program to honor two-time World junior champion Elena Radionova, who recently announced the end of her skating career. Radionova will be awarded the Badge of Honor of the Russian Figure Skating Federation for Outstanding Sports Achievements, and will perform a show number.
A limited number of spectators will be permitted to attend the senior competitions on Oct. 10 and 11 in Moscow. Stricter precautions will be in place than at the test skates where fans congregated in groups and did not wear masks.

STAGE I – SYZRAN – Sep. 18-22

Numbers are restricted at the senior level for each stage of the series: 12 men, 12 ladies, eight pairs and 10 dance teams. For the junior competitions: up to 18 men and ladies, and no more than 8 pairs and 15 dance teams.
The results of the 2020 Russian Championships were the determining factor for athletes to be automatically assigned to 2020 Cup of Russia. Evgenia Medvedeva is one of two exceptions. She was forced to withdraw from the 2020 Championships after the short program due to a broken skate. The other is Mikhail Kolyada who was missed last season due to a serious nasal issue, which ultimately required surgery.
Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov were scheduled to open their season at the first stage of this series, but on Sept. 16 it was reported that Morozov had contracted the COVID-19 virus. “I hope that the form is mild. Hopefully, we will be in time for Skate America and we will perform at the later stages of the Russian Cup,″ Morozov said. “I hope this (coronavirus ) has a short history.“ The team subsequently withdrew from the Grand Prix competition.
On Sept. 28, the team also withdrew from the second stage in Moscow (Oct. 10-13). “The guys have no time to prepare for the second stage of the Russian Cup. They can only get to the last stage. It will also be held in Moscow,″ said Maxim Trankov, who co-coaches the team with Marina Zoueva.
Alina Zagitova will not contest any of the five competitions. She recently signed on as a co-host of a television show, ″ice Age,″ and has decided to focus on her new career at this time. Ksenia Sinitsyna was scheduled to compete at the first stage of the series, but her coach Svetlana Panova confirmed she will miss this event due to injury. Subsequent to her coaching change this week, Medvedeva has also withdrawn from the first stage of the series. Alexander Samarin is out with an unspecified medical issue.
Kamila Valieva will compete at the senior level and has been assigned to the two stages in Moscow.
