SYNCHRONIZED SKATING

Elite 12

A new format for synchronized skating will debut this season, featuring teams with 12 skaters as opposed to the regular 16. The ISU proposed the format change to ISU member nations in February and following the positive responses it received, the Elite 12 concept will be tested at two international competitions during the 2021-2022 season.

Further information will be provided in due course with respect to which competitions this concept will be tested at and the program requirements for teams.

FEDERATION CALENDARS

U.S. Figure Skating has published a list of domestic competitions scheduled to take place in 2021 and 2022.

Skate Canada has published the domestic and international competitions it will host in the 2021-2022 season. The 2022 OLYMPIC TEAM SELECTION PROCESS explained.

Japan Skating Federation has announced the dates and locations for its domestic competitions for the 2021-2022 season.

Fédération Francaise des Sports de Glace has posted its domestic competition calendar for the Olympic season.

Ice Skating Australia has published a spreadsheet of athlete applications/assignments for the 2021-2022 season. 

The Channel 1 Cup, scheduled to be held in Moscow March 6-7, has been postponed indefinitely.

The 2022 World Junior Championships will take place in Tallinn, Estonia, April 14-17. Russian and Belarusian skaters/officials are banned from attending this competition.
 
The 2022 Triglav Trophy & Narcisa Cup takes place in Jesenice, Slovenia, April 13-17.

The European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) takes place in Vuokatti, Finland, March 20-25. Figure skating events will be held March 23-24. No Russian athletes or officials were permitted to attend EYOF. ROC filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport. However, no hearing was scheduled, so we assume this appeal has been abandoned.

The 2022 Olympic Winter Games take place in Beijing, China, Feb. 4-20. Olympic teams announced. Due to Japan and the Czech Republic each withdrawing a judge from the Olympic Games panels, an additional draw took place at Europeans.

The 2022 Four Continents Championships will be held in Tallinn, Estonia, Jan 20-23.

The Asian Open Figure Skating Trophy, the test event for the 2022 Olympic Winter Games, takes place Oct. 14-15 in Beijing. Wenjing Sui and Cong Han are scheduled to make their season debut at this competition.

The second stage of the 2021 Cup of Russia series takes place in Yoshkar-Ola, Oct. 10-14.

Finlandia Trophy Espoo takes place Oct. 7-10. Links for this competition, which has many of the top skaters in the world scheduled to compete, are HERE.

The 2021 Junior Grand Prix Series kicks off with two competitions in Courchevel, France, Aug. 18-21 and Aug. 25-28. It was in this town that the ISU delivered its first Junior Grand Prix live stream seven years ago. Many will remember the emergence of a sprightly teenager named Evgenia Medvedeva at that competition. Ted Barton shared his thoughts on what he anticipates will be an ″interesting season.″

French Masters is scheduled to take place Sep. 30-Oct. 2 in Epinal. Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron will make their season debut at this competition. Start Orders/ResultsLive stream

The 2021 Japan Open/Carnival on Ice will take place Oct. 2 in Saitama. Due to immigration/quarantine restrictions, only Japanese skaters will compete again this year. Skaters have been divided into two teams:

RED: Kaori Sakamoto, Rino Matsuike, Mana Kawabe, Keiji Tanaka, Kazuki Tomono and Sena Miyake

BLUE: Satoko Miyahara, Mai Mihara, Wakaba Higuchi, Shoma Uno, Shun Sato and Sota Yamamoto

Shizuka Arakawa and Akiko Suzuki will be the guest skaters. Live stream / Results / Team Result.Carnival on Ice will be live streamed only in Japan.

The Japan Skating Federation will send skaters to three of the later Challenger Series events.

The six Japanese regional competitions started Sep. 23.

The U.S. International Figure Skating Classic (not a Challenger Series event this year but an ISU Senior B) will take place at the Skating Club of Boston’s venue in Norwood, Mass., Sept. 16-18. The event will be streamed but is limited to those resident in the United States. The 2021 Challenger Series opens with Lombardia Trophy in Bergamo, Italy, Sep. 10-12.

The second event of the 2021 Challenger Series, Autumn Classic International, is scheduled for Sep. 16-18.

2021 Nebelhorn Trophy, the final qualifying event for the 2022 Olympic Winter Games, will be held Sep. 23-25.

The fifth event of the 2021 Junior Grand Prix Series takes place in Ljubljana, Slovenia, Sep. 23-25. Links for this competition are HERE.

Canada and the U.S. will host a Challenger Series event in alternating years going forward. U.S. Figure Skating will host the International Figure Skating Classic (a senior B competition this year) at the Skating Club of Boston’s facility in Norwood, Massachusetts, Sep. 15-19. This event takes place the same weekend as Autumn Classic International. A pairs event has now been added to Autumn Classic International.

The 2021 Russian senior test skates will be held in Chelyabinsk, Sep. 11-12.

The John Nicks Pairs Challenge will be held as part of Middle Atlantic Championships, Sep. 9-10. This competition will take place at the Sky Rink at Chelsea Piers in New York City. No live stream for international viewers. Start Orders/Results

The 2021 Cranberry Open (a senior B competition for singles and pairs), the Cranberry Cup International and the annual Lake Placid Ice Dance International will take place at the Skating Club of Boston′s Norwood facility, Aug. 12-15. Skaters competing at the Cranberry Cup International include Mariah Bell, Alysa Liu, Madeline Schizas, Young You, Donovan Carrillo, Vincent Zhou, Maxim Naumov, Yaroslav Paniot, Alexa Knierim/Brandon Frazier and Evgenia Tarasova/Vladimir Morozov. The Québec Summer Championships will take place Aug. 5-8, at the Sporteplex 4 Glaces Pierrefonds. Skaters will attend in person and judging will be remote. Senior competitors include Vanessa James and Eric Radford, Deanna Stellato and Maxime Deschamps, Marjorie Lajoie and Zachary Lagha, Gabrielle Daleman and Australian ice dancers Holly Harris and Jason Chan. The Philippine Skating Union (PSU) is holding a skate off to determine who will go to Nebelhorn to try and earn a place for their nation at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games. Three men are contending for the honor: Christopher Caluza, Michael Christian Martinez and Edrian Paul Celestino. The selection process is divided into two parts. The first part: the PSU Olympic Qualifier Evaluation will show unedited footage of the short and long programs that have been virtually assessed by a panel of international judges. These performances will be streamed Aug. 6. The second part: All three skaters must compete at an in-person international competition. The scores of each man will be combined from both competitions to determine who goes to Oberstdorf.

The 2021 Wild Rose Invitational in Alberta, Canada is a virtual event this year. Scheduled to stream Aug. 4-8.

Glacier Falls Summer Classic will take place in Anaheim, California, July 29-Aug. 1. Senior skaters include Yaroslav Paniot, Andrew Torgashev, Audrey Shin, Kailaini Craine, Jessica Calalang and Brian Johnson and Chelsea Liu and Danny O′Shea. No live stream. Full entry lists are HERE. The Philadelphia Summer Championships is scheduled for July 27-31 at the Ice Works in Aston, Pennsylvania. (Not an international event this year). Senior skaters include Gracie Gold, Ting Cui and Lindsay Thorngren. Live Scoring

The 2021 Peggy Fleming Trophy will be held virtually and will air online on the U.S. Figure Skating Fan Zone on Fri., July 16 at 7:00 p.m. (EST). Competitors include Jason Brown, Karen Chen, Alysa Liu, Yaroslav Paniot, Camden Pulkinen and Andrew Torgashev. You can watch this competition on demand at any time.

The 2021 ISU Skating Awards will be streamed worldwide on July 10 on the ISU Skating Channel(direct link) at 4:00 p.m. (CEST). Given the challenges of this past season, only the Lifetime Award will be presented this year, but the ISU is planning a gala show for skating fans. Tanith White and Charlie White will once again host the show.

The Japan Society (based in New York City) will host an online discussion — “The Inside Edge: Skating Champions from Japan and the U.S.” — on June 29 at 8:00 p.m. (EST). Miki Ando, Yuka Sato, Satoko Miyahara and Mirai Nagasu will be the guest speakers. Nancy Kerrigan will moderate the forum, which will cover a range of topics including competing, life after competitive skating, the athletic mindset and resiliency in overcoming challenges, super fans and the popularity of the sport in Japan. Fans will have the opportunity to ask live questions of the panelists. Pre-registration is required.

Ice Skating Australia will get its Benchmark domestic season underway with the 2021 Hollins Trophy, which will take place in Sydney at the Canterbury Olympic Ice Rink, June 11-14. Results are HERE. The NSW Ice Skating Association has its own YouTube channel and will live streams the events.
