The Russian Figure Skating Federation and the Channel One network will host a team competition at the Megasport Sports Palace in Moscow, Feb. 5-7. The top six skaters in each discipline at the 2021 Russian Championships, the reigning European and World champions/medalists and other top skaters have been invited to participate. Two teams will battle it out for top honors and prize money of 10 million rubles (US$136,000). Alina Zagitova and Evgenia Medvedeva have been appointed the team captains and both will perform show numbers at the end of the jump competition.
The ladies, men and pairs teams will compete both a short and long program and the ice dancers will perform a rhythm and free dance. The competition will be judged under the IJS. As well, teams will compete for an Audience Award, with spectators voting during the live competition. Prior to the team event, a separate jump competition will be held.
The teams will be decided by a draw and, along with the team captains, each one will decide on a name. Teams will also each prepare a show number.
The competition, which will be held in the presence of spectators, will be broadcast live on Channel One, and on the network′s YouTube channel with Ted Barton as the host. Renowned Russian coach Tatiana Tarasova has been invited to judge the jump competition. Alena Kostornaia has withdrawn from the competition as she continues to recover from a bout of coronavirus. Maiia Khromykh will take her place.
“In the difficult conditions of this season, the Russian Figure Skating Federation is doing everything possible so that athletes remain motivated, do not stop practicing and continue to delight the fans,″ said general director, Alexander Kogan. “Strictly observing all the restrictions, we held five stages of the Russian Cup and the 2021 Russian Championships with the participation of the country′s strongest skaters. Figure skating is the trump card of Russian sports today. Following the cancellation of the 2021 European Championships, we decided to hold an additional series of tournaments to provide leading athletes with competitive practice in the pre-Olympic season. We hope that the new tournament will be a boon for fans.″

This competition be in the format of a “Battle of the Sexes — ladies versus the men — with skaters competing in three rounds. In the first round, each team will be required to execute four different jumps. Team members will among themselves who does which jump. In the second round, each skater will execute their own hardest jump. In the third round, each team member will execute combinations with a total of five jumps. The competition will be judged according to the IJS rules.
