The second of the two events hosted by the Polish Figure Skating Federation takes place in Gdańsk, Oct. 5-8. All four disciplines will be contested. A total of 80 singles skaters — 31 men and 49 women — 10 pairs and 17 ice dance teams are slated to compete. This will be the second event for a number of skaters/teams, some of which will be vying for a spot at the Junior Grand Prix Final in December.
The men′s line up is a mixed bag, with some having international experience at the junior and senior levels and others who have very little or none. South Korea′s Minkyu Seo, 13, was impressive at his first event in Ostrava, winning the short program and finishing fourth overall. Japan is fielding three newcomers, Takeru Amine Katie, Seigo Tauchi and Rio Nakata. Canada has assigned two men, one of whom is Anthony Paradis, the reigning junior champion. This competition will mark the international debut for Paradis and Edward Vasii, who are both coached by Yvan Desjardins.
The women′s event features four medalists from earlier Junior Grand Prix events this season. South Korea′s Jia Shin, the gold medalist in Latvia and Minsol Kwon, the silver medalist in Ostrava; and Japan’s Ayumi Shibayama, the runner up in Courchevel, and Ami Nakai, third in Riga.
This will be the second of back-to-back competitions for the Australian pairs team of Anastasia Golubeva and Hector Giatopolous Moore, the winners of the first event in Poland. Sophia Baram and Daniel Tioumentsev of the U.S., the gold medalists in Ostrava, will be looking to book a trip to the Junior Grand Prix Final. Canada′s Chloe Panetta and Kieran Thrasher, third in Ostrava, and Ashlyn Schmitz and Tristan Taylor, third in Riga, will be chasing a podium finish.
Canada′s Nadiia Bashynska and Peter Beaumont, who scored a runaway victory at the first event in Poland, headline the ice dance field. Germany’s Darya Grimm and Michail Savitskiy, the gold medalists in Riga, will be in the hunt for a top finish to earn a trip to the Final. The young American brother/sister team of Elliana Peal and Ethan Peal will be looking to improve on their fourth-place finish in Courchevel.
