The sixth event of the 2022 Challenger Series, Budapest Trophy, hosted by the Hungarian Skating Federation, takes place Oct. 14-16. This is a non-pairs event, 18 men, 22 women and 15 ice dance teams slated to compete.
Kévin Aymoz of France was originally assigned to this event, but he suffered an ankle sprain at French Masters on Oct. 8 and is out of competition for the next couple of weeks. Possible contenders in the men′s event include Italy′s Nikolaj Memola, who is enjoying the best season of his career in both the junior and senior ranks, and his teammate Matteo Rizzo, who will be looking to improve on his fourth-place finish at 2022 Lombardia Trophy.
Young You of South Korea, the runner-up at the U.S. International Figure Skating Classic, was scheduled to compete in the women′s event, but has withdrawn. German′s Nicole Schott is slated to make her 2022 Challenger Series debut. The U.S. is sending two women; no Canadians have been assigned to this competition.
In ice dance, Italy′s Charlène Guignard and Marco Fabbri, victors at Lombardia Trophy in early September, have withdrawn from this competition. In their absence, Canada′s Marjorie Lajoie and Zachary Lagha, who were golden at 2022 Nepela Memorial, should be considered the favourites to take the title. They will be joined by Alicia Fabbri and Paul Ayer. The U.S. is fielding two young teams: Oona Brown and Gage Brown and Katarina Wolfkostin and Jeffrey Chen.
