The 2021 Skate Canada Challenge took place virtually in the latter part of 2020. Challenge is the qualifying competition for skaters aiming to earn a berth at the 2021 Canadian Championships. However, on Jan. 11, Skate Canada announced that the national championships, scheduled to take place in Vancouver, British Columbia, Feb. 8-14, have been cancelled.
The entire competition — juniors and seniors — will be streamed over two consecutive weekends, Jan. 8-10 and Jan. 15-17. Ted Barton will host the competition, which will include interviews with skaters, coaches and Skate Canada leaders. Skate Canada has confirmed the streams will be available worldwide.
The first stream (Jan. 8-10) will feature the short and long programs of the senior pairs teams, and the junior ladies, men and pairs teams. The following weekend (Jan. 15-17), the short and long programs of the senior men, ladies and ice dance competitions will air along with the junior ice dance event.
Skate Canada has produced a schedule listing the time that each skater’s performance will be streamed. Keegan Messing, who lives in Alaska, and Stephen Gogolev, who trains in California, are not on the roster.
The second weekend of 2021 Skate Canada Challenge has a slight overlap with the 2021 U.S. Championships:
Jan. 15: Senior ladies short program airs at the same time as the senior rhythm dance takes place at U.S. nationals
Jan. 16: Senior ladies free skate airs at the same time as the senior men′s short program takes place at U.S. nationals
Jan. 17: Junior free dance airs at the same time as the senior men′s free skate takes place at U.S. nationals
