The fifth event of the Junior Grand Prix Series, 2021 JGP Slovenia, will play out in Ljubljana, Sep. 23-25. Three disciplines will be contested. There are currently 18 men, 31 women and 17 ice dance teams scheduled to compete. As we have seen at all the JGPs so far this season, a number of the new kids on the block have out-performed their more experienced counterparts and claimed steps on the podiums, so no doubt more surprises are in store in Ljubljana.
In the men′s field, some now-familiar names are on the roster: Russia′s Ilia Yablokov, second at the JGP in Slovakia; Florent Amodio′s young student Francois Pitot, the bronze medalist at the first event in Courchevel; Arlet Levandi of Estonia, the silver medalist at the second JGP in Courchevel and Younghyun Cha of Korea, who finished a disappointing seventh in Slovakia. This is the third season, and only the third Junior Grand Prix event for Canada′s Alec Guinzbourg, who finished fourth in Chelyabinsk in 2019. He is coached by Lee Barkell and Jeffrey Buttle in Toronto.
For many of the skaters listed for the women′s event this will be their first foray onto an international stage. Lindsay Thorngren, the gold medalist in Courchevel in week 1 of the Series, will go up against two Russian entries — Adeliia Petrosian who finished third in Slovakia and Sofia Samodelkina, the bronze medalist in Krasnoyarsk last week.
Katarina Wolfkostin and Jeffrey Chen of the U.S., victors at the first JGP in Courchevel, and Canada′s Natalie D′Alessandro and Bruce Waddell, the gold medalists in Slovakia, are strong contenders for the podium. Russia is fielding two teams to this competition: Vasilisa Kaganovskaia and Valeriy Angelopol, who finished second in Slovakia, and one with no international experience.
This competition takes place the same weekend as Nebelhorn Trophy, the final qualifying event for the 2022 Olympic Winter Games, and the first stop of the 2021 Cup of Russia series.
