2019 Lombardia Trophy, the second event of the Challenger Series, takes place Sept. 13-15 at the Ice Lab rink in Milan, Italy. Three disciplines will be contested: men, ladies and ice dance. This competition overlaps with Skate Canada′s Autumn Classic International and the Junior Grand Prix event in Chelyabinsk, Russia (Sept. 12-14).
Boyang Jin of China, Italy′s Matteo Rizzo, and Andrei Lazukin of Russia headline a field of 15. No Canadian or U.S. men are currently on the roster. Kazuki Tomono is Japan′s sole representative.
There are currently 19 ladies slated to compete. The battle for gold will likely be between the three Russian ladies: Elizaveta Tuktamysheva, Sofia Samodurova and Anna Shcherbakova, who will make her senior debut in Milan along with South Korea′s Yelim Kim and Young You. Japan′s Mai Mihara was originally assigned to this event but due to health problems she has withdrawn. Wakaba Higuchi, her nation′s sole entry in the field, will be looking for a top result after being sidelined for most of last season with an injured instep. Kazakhstan′s Elizabet Tursynbaeva is also out with an undisclosed injury.
The ice dance line-up features 15 teams from 11 nations. Italy′s Charlène Guignard and Marco Fabbri lead the field ahead of Canada′s Laurence Fournier-Beaudry and Nikolaj Sørensen. We expect the battle for gold should be between these two teams.
New kids on the block include Canada′s Marjorie Lajoie and Zachary Lagha who will make their senior debut in Milan and the new U.S. team of Caroline Green and Michael Parsons, who will begin their international career at this competition.
