2017 JGP Austria – the second event of the Junior Grand Prix Series moves north of the Equator and will take place in the historic city of Salzburg, Austria. The competition starts Aug. 31 at 3 p.m. local time with the short dance. This is a non-pairs event. Currently, there are 21 men, 29 ladies and 16 ice dance teams are scheduled to compete.
Camden Pulkinen of the U.S. leads the way in the men′s field. He will be joined by Ryan Dunk. Russia has two young talents, both basically untested on the international stages, so it will be interesting to see how they fare at this competition. Luc Economides of France has been performing well this year and it is possible that he could snag a medal in Salzburg. Basar Oktar of Turkey has been steadily improving and he should have no trouble placing in the top five.
Russia′s Anastasia Tarakanova headlines the ladies division and, in her first event of the season, will be in the hunt for gold. Her main challengers for the title will be Eunsoo Lim of South Korea, Mako Yamashita of Japan, and America′s Starr Andrews.
Christina Carreira and Anthony Ponomarenko of the U.S. open their season at this competition and are the headliners in the ice dance field. Their main challengers will be the young Russian duo of Ksenia Konkina and Grigory Yakushev. Expect both of these teams to land on the podium but in what order is an open question. Third place is wide open with a second Russian team and one from France with good shots at capturing the bronze medal.
2017 JGP Austria will be live streamed on the ISU channel with Ted Barton as the host.
The 2017 Junior Grand Prix Final takes place in Nagoya, Japan, Dec. 7-10.
