Golden Spin

Golden Spin of Zagreb, the final event of the 2021 Challenger Series, takes place Dec. 9–11 with some of the top names in the sport in the line ups. There are currently 27 men, 23 women, 17 pairs and 14 ice dance teams listed on the rosters. No skaters from Japan will compete.

Many of the entries will be looking to have one final competitive run through of their programs before an international judging panel to prepare for their national championships, which, in most cases, will serve as the Olympic qualifying event this season.

Top names in the men′s field currently includes Kévin Aymoz of France, Canada′s Keegan Messing and Deniss Vasiljevs of Latvia. The three Israeli men currently listed are in a battle to claim the lone spot at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games, with Alexei Bychenko the frontrunner at this time. Jason Brown has withdrawn from this competition.

An international cast is currently slated for the women′s event, including two entries from Australia. Bradie Tennell of the U.S. was slated to make her first start of the season in Zagreb, but withdrew as she continues to deal with a foot injury. Gabriella Izzo has been named as her replacement. Mariah Bell also withdrew and was replaced by Amber Glenn.

The pairs event will be one of the most interesting with some of the top teams from the U.S. and Canada going head-to-head. Australia′s Harley Windsor has formed a new pairs partnership with Russia′s Maria Chernyshova. The duo is set to make their debut at this competition and will go up against their teammates Anastasia Golubeva and Hektor Giatopoulos Moore, who finished fifth at both their Junior Grand Prix events and eighth at Nebelhorn Trophy.

In ice dance, the American team of Kaitlin Hawayek and Jean-Luc Baker have a good shot at capturing the title. Russia′s Annabelle Morozov and Andrei Bagin and Georgia′s Maria Kazakova and Georgy Reviya have withdrawn.
