Cup of China
The second event of the Grand Prix Series, 2020 Cup of China, will take place at the Huaxi Culture and Sports Center in Chongqing, Nov. 6-8. After consultation with local health officials, the Chinese Skating Association has decided that the competition will be held without spectators.

Boyang Jin and Han Yan headline a slimmed down men′s event with just six skaters on the roster. No matter who else is named, Jin and Yan are shoe-ins for gold and silver. Jin has two new programs this season: ″Caishu Fu″ by Zhaoxiao Xu, ″Trio 1 in D″ and ″Mechanisms″ by Kirill Richter for the short, and ″House of the Rising Sun,″ performed by The House on Cliff, for the free. Yan has kept both programs from last season: ″A Thousand Years″ by Christina Perri and David Hodges (short) and ″Mia & Sebastian’s Theme″ and “City of Stars & Audition — Medley” from the “La La Land” soundtrack (free skate). Five skaters will take to the ice in the ladies event. No doubt the Chinese Skating Association is getting slightly concerned about its lack of competitive ladies given that the 2022 Olympic Winter Games are just 17 months away.

Reigning World pairs champions, Wenjing Sui and Cong Han have withdrawn. Han underwent surgery for a groin injury in June and, according to a recent post by his coach Hongbo Zhao, he is recovering well and ″his ability is about 20-30% now. He needs to slowly regain his strength.″ On Oct. 29, it was announced that though Siu and Han would not compete, they would go to Chongqing to train with their teammates during Cup of China. The duo has kept one program from last season and will return to one — as yet not announced — from a previous season.

Of the three pairs teams on the roster, Cheng Peng and Yang Jin will win the title by a mile and capture their first Grand Prix title. Cheng said that, unlike other seasons when they would be under a lot of pressure, after nine months of no competitions the duo is looking forward to this opportunity. Their programs this season are ″Somewhere in Time″ by John Barry for the short and a medley from the ″Cloud Atlas″ soundtrack. Peng/Jin short program long program

China is in a rebuilding stage with its pairs program — which is also likely giving the federation cause for concern so close to the Games. Xiaoyu Yu, who was formerly paired with Hao Zhang, reportedly has a new partner, Lei Wang. (His previous partner, Xuehan Wang, retired due to injury). Zhang, 36, has been dealing with injuries the past two years and it is reported that he has not trained in a long time.

Shiyue Wang and Xinyu Liu, who train at the International Academy in Montréal, will definitely improve on their fourth place finish in 2019 and are solid bets for gold this year. Hong Chen and Zhuoming Sun, who also train in Montréal, finished eighth last season. They should capture silver without any challenge. Shiyue Wang/Xinyu Liu rhythm dance free dance
