At the conclusion of the 2020 All Japan Championships, the Japanese skating federation named its team for the 2021 World Championships, scheduled to take place in Stockholm, Sweden, March 22-28.

The Japan Skating Federation (JSF) held a virtual board meeting on June 24 to approve the business plan for the 2020-2021 season. It also confirmed the competition schedule within Japan, subject to the situation with COVID-19.
The 2020 All Japan Championships are scheduled to take place Dec. 23-27 at the Big Hat arena in Nagano City, Nagano Prefecture. The junior championships will be held at Flat Hachinohe, a brand new facility in Hachinohe City, Aomori Prefecture, Nov. 21-23, and the novice championships at the ALSOK Gunma Ice Arena in Maebashi City, Gunma Prefecture Oct. 23-25.
The JSF, like the rest of the world, is awaiting the decision of the ISU with respect to international competitions. NHK Trophy, the final Grand Prix of the 2020-2021 Series, is tentatively scheduled to take place at the RACTAB Dome in Kadoma City, Osaka Prefecture Nov. 27-29.
All six regional competitions and the novice championships will be held without spectators.
On June 13, the JSF announced that Rika Kihira has changed coaches and will be relocating to Toronto, Canada, in July to train with Brian Orser at the Cricket Club. The 17-year-old, who was formerly coached by Mei Hamada and represented the Kansai University Kaisers Figure Skating Club, will now represent the North Tokyo High School Figure Skating Club. That plan was changed in the summer and Kihira instead moved to Switzerland to train with Stéphane Lambiel.
