The 2021 World Team Trophy is set to take place at the Maruzen Intec Arena in Osaka, Japan, April 15-21. A limited number of fans will be in attendance. The ISU will live stream the competition, as will television networks around the world. A full list of viewing options is below. Japanese fans who are not able to attend the competition will be able to watch the gala exhibition live in select cinemas.
In regular seasons, nations would earn points at international competitions. However, this year, given the health situation, the top six nations were determined by combining the results of the 2019-2020 Grand Prix season and the 2021 World Championships. Each of the six countries will field two singles skaters, one pairs team and one ice dance team. Total prize money of US$1 million will be awarded at this competition, with the winning team taking home US$200,000.
The top six nations that qualified for this competition are Canada, China, Italy, Japan, Russia and the U.S. China declined the invitation and France moved into that spot.
Japan, FSR and the U.S. are fielding strong teams to this competition and once again, this time with homeland pride on the line, the top two titans of figure skating — Nathan Chen and Yuzuru Hanyu — will battle it out for top honors. Italy’s Matteo Rizzo posted a note to Instagram that he had to withdraw from this competition after testing positive for COVID-19. Italy will have only one man competing in Osaka.
