The 2021 Denis Ten Memorial Challenge takes place in Nur-Sultan (formerly Astana), Kazakstan, Oct. 28–31. No skaters or teams from North America, Japan or Korea are in the line ups at this time.
In the men’s event, 12 entries from seven nations are slated to compete. Given the results so far this season, Russia’s Mark Kondratiuk is the top name on the roster. He will be joined by Andrei Mozalev, the reigning Junior Grand Prix Final and World Junior champion and Petr Gumennik, the 2020 World Junior bronze medalist.
Kazakhstan’s Mikhail Shaidorov, who is coached by Alexei Urmanov, will be looking for another solid outing following his success on the 2021 Junior Grand Prix circuit. In week six of the Series, Shaidorov became the first man from Kazakhstan to win a Junior Grand Prix medal (silver in Gdańsk, Poland) since Denis Ten mined gold in Belarus in 2008.
A total of 12 women are currently on the roster. They include Viktoriia Safonova of Belarus (the bronze medalist at Nebelhorn Trophy), Azerbaijan’s Ekaterina Ryabova and Kailani Craine of Australia.
The ice dance field currently lists seven teams, which include Anastasia Skotpcova and Kirill Aleshin of Russia who have not competed internationally so far this season but are the most experienced team in the field.
On Oct. 28 it was announced that Russia’s Sergei Voronov has been appointed head coach of the Kazakhstan national figure skating team.
This competition overlaps with the Canadian Grand Prix Skate Canada International.
