2018 JGP Canada — the fourth event of the Junior Grand Prix Series — takes place at the Richmond Minoru Arena in British Columbia, Sep. 12-15. This competition replaces the event originally scheduled for Harbin, China. A total of 72 athletes will compete: 21 men, 29 ladies, 11 pairs and 11 ice dance teams. Two young stars that shone brightly on the first stage of the 2018 Junior circuit will be competing in Vancouver. They will go up against a number of high-ranked junior stars from last season and a group of talented newcomers.
MEN
Canada′s Stephen Gogolev, 13, claimed a runaway victory in his international junior debut in Bratislava. He is one step away from making the Junior Grand Prix Final, but will need to medal in Vancouver to ensure a berth. His teammates at this event will be Ilya Kovler and Beresford Louise Clements who placed 12th in his first event, Cup of Austria, at the end of August.
In his fourth season on the Junior Circuit, Tomoki Hiwatashi of the U.S. will be looking to better his third place finishes at both his junior assignments last season in order to earn a place at the Final.
Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama will make his Grand Prix debut at this event. The 15-year-old claimed the junior title at the 2018 Asian Open Trophy in early August.
LADIES
Russia′s Anna Shcherbakova, 14, has an impressive technical repertoire (including a quad Lutz), and an even more impressive natural artistic and musical flair. Her talent was on full display in her Junior Grand Prix debut in Bratislava in late August. The Moscow teen scored a runaway victory at that event and will be looking for a repeat in Vancouver to secure her place at the Junior Final.
Anastasia Tarakanova, 14, the 2017 Junior Grand Prix Final bronze medalist, who is now coached by Evgeni Plushenko, will be her teammate at this event.
South Korea′s Young You, 14 won her first national title in 2016 at age 11, and is capable of landing triple Axel-triple toe combinations. You claimed bronze at her first event in Bratislava.
PAIRS
Russia′s Apollinariia Panfilova and Dmitry Rylov, runners-up at the 2017 junior Final, finished second at their first event. In Vancouver, they will go head-to-head with the rookie team that defeated them in Bratislava — Anastasia Mishina and Aleksandr Galliamov. One of these teams will skate away with gold, the other, silver. If both teams medal they will snare two of the berths at the Junior Final in December.
Canada’s Patricia Andrew and Paxton Fletcher were impressive in their debut in Bratislava, finishing fourth overall. This team could have a shot at capturing bronze on home soil.
ICE DANCE
Canadian ice dancers Marjorie Lajoie and Zachary Lagha missed the 2018 World junior podium by 0.66 of a point. The duo opened this season with a second-place finish at their first Grand Prix in Austria, but will be the team to beat in Richmond.
Eliana Gropman and Ian Somerville of the U.S. placed third at their first event in Bratislava and will be strong medal contenders. Their teammates, Emma Gunter and Caleb Wein, kicked off their season with a win at the 2018 Lake Placid Ice Dance competition (junior division), the first victory of their career.
