The subtropical city of Brisbane (pronounced “brizban”), Australia, hosts the first of the seven-event 2017 Junior Grand Prix Series, Aug. 24-27, with 24 ladies, 15 men, and 9 ice dance teams scheduled to open their respective seasons in the land downunder. This is a non-pairs competition.
With all of the junior champions from last season having moved into the senior ranks, the Junior Grand Prix Series this year will showcase many new talents.
The skating world has been waiting impatiently for the debut of the young Russian phenom Alexandra Trusova. Videos of her landing quad jumps in practice sessions have created an anticipation to see her execute these jumps live on an international stage. She will be joined by teammate Anastasia Guliakova.
Alexei Krasnozhon of the U.S. is the top-ranked skater in the men′s field. He should have no problem skating to gold ahead of the two Russian entries — Roman Savosin and Egor Rukhin. Canada′s Joseph Phan also opens his season in Brisbane and has a shot a winning a medal, as does Italy′s Daniel Grassl.
Canada′s Marjorie Lajoie and Zachary Lagha have a good shot at taking a medal at this competition. Their main challengers will be Sofia Polishchuk and Alexander Vakhnov and Elizaveta Khudaiberdievva and Nikita Nazarov of Russia. Two brothers will be challenging each other further down the standings: Bruce Waddell and his partner Natale D′Allesandro of Canada and George Waddell and Sasha Fear who represent Great Britain. Fear is the younger sister of the current U.K. ice dance champions Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson.
2017 JGP Australia will be live streamed on the ISU channel with Ted Barton as the host.
The 2017 Grand Prix Final takes place in Nagoya, Japan, Dec. 7-10.
