2022 CANADIAN OLYMPIC TEAM — SELECTION PROCESS

On Dec. 27, the Japan Skating Federation named the team that will compete in Beijing.
On Dec. 21 a Lithuanian media outlet announced that Allison Reed’s application for Lithuanian citizenship had been denied for a second time. She and Sauliaus Ambrulevičiaus earned a place at the 2022 Games but unless a “Christmas miracle” happens that spot will likely go to another team.
In early December Russia unveiled its uniforms and flag for the 2022 Olympic Winter Games.
FIGURE SKATING
A total of 144 skaters — men (30), women (30), pairs (19) and ice dance (23) — will compete at the Games, with a maximum of 18 athletes per country.
Russia was the only nation to earn the full quota of three skaters/teams in all four disciplines. The U.S. ranked second with three entries in men, women and ice dance, and two in pairs.

JUDGES DRAW — INDIVIDUAL EVENTS
The judges′ draw for the 2022 Olympic Winter Games was held at 2021 Nebelhorn Trophy. Canada and China have judges on all four panels. Russia and the U.S. have no judge on the men′s panel and Japan has no judge on the women′s panel.
Though Georgia will field skaters to the Games, it has no judges on any panel due to the fact that its only ISU-level judge was suspended in July 2021 for bias with respect to the marks she awarded a Georgian skater at the 2021 World Championships.

JUDGES DRAW — TEAM EVENT
The results of 2021 Nebelhorn Trophy determined the top 10 nations that are eligible to compete in the Team Event in Beijing (with skaters qualified in three or more disciplines):
Russia, U.S., Canada, Japan, China, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Georgia, Germany and Italy
Judges for the Team Event were drawn from the same pool as for the individual competitions and therefore the panels for this competition are not limited to judges from nations that will compete. Russia was not drawn for any of the four panels for the Team Event.

NATIONAL TEAM SELECTION CRITERIA

China: ″In order to openly, fairly and justly select athletes of the highest level in China to represent the country at the Olympic Winter Games … the methods for the selection of single figure skating athletes for the Beijing Olympic Games have been formulated.″
Singles skaters aiming for a place on the 2022 Olympic team must compete at a series of five domestic competitions scheduled to take place Dec. 16-18, Dec. 30-Jan 1 (two competitions), and Jan. 20-22 (two competitions).
Skaters in the running for the lone men′s spot are Boyang Jin, Han Yan and Yudong Chen and in women, Hongyi Chen, Shan Lin and Yi Zhu. The skater who earns the highest number of points in each discipline will be selected for the Olympic team. These competitions will be judged via video by international ISU panels and will be supervised by the Department of Competitive Sports and the Commission for Discipline Inspection to ensure the selection process is fair.
The pairs and ice dance teams that will compete in Beijing: Wenjing Sui/Cong Han and Peng Cheng/Yang Jin in pairs, and Shiyue Wang/Xinyu Liu in ice dance.

“Participation in the All Japan Championship, which is the final selection, is mandatory. However, if the athlete who finished third at the World Championships in the past cannot participate in the All Japan Championship due to unavoidable reasons such as injury, then that skater’s performance before the occurrence of injury or other circumstances that caused the non-participation may be evaluated in light of the above selection criteria, and selection may be made while looking at the condition at the time of the tournament.”
(A) A skater who falls under (A), (B) or (C) of the second group but is not selected in that group
(B) Top three in the ISU World Standings at the end of the All Japan Championships
(C) Top three ISU Season World Rankings at the end of the All Japan Championships
(D) Top two season best technical scores in international competitions, the All Japan Championships and domestic competitions as designated by the strengthening department.
PAIRS AND ICE DANCE: Japan has one spot in pairs and ice dance at the 2022 Olympics. Skaters who meet any of the following criteria will be eligible for selection:
All Japan Championships top group: ISU World Standing at the end of the All Japan Championships; the highest in the ISU Season World Ranking at the end of the All Japan Championships; the highest of the ISU Season Best Scores at the end of the All Japan Championships.
