IFS JUNE 2020

IFS June 2020

While many publications are no longer producing printed versions of their product, and some are offering only digital versions at this time, the IFS team felt it was important to continue our work in the hope that we can deliver a small sense of “normal” to the lives of our loyal readers. Staying connected and in the loop with all things skating can provide a very positive distraction from what is going on in the outside world.

As bookstores in North America are closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, the print edition of IFS June 2020 will only be available for purchase through our online store. To order a copy of this issue or to subscribe to IFS click HERE. In Japan, copies can be purchased directly from Magazine Mart.

The postal services in France and Italy are not accepting and will not deliver magazines at this time. IFS subscribers from those countries will have their subscriptions extended as a courtesy.

Madison Chock and Evan Bates lit up the skating world with their entrancing Egyptian-themed free dance last season. The American team landed on five podiums in 2019, won the 2020 U.S. and Four Continents Championships titles, and looked set to make a solid run for the top rung of the ladder at Worlds in Montreal. In this exclusive interview, Chock and Bates, along with co-choreographer Sam Chouinard, talk about the concept for the free dance and how it evolved.

Kirsten Moore-Towers and Michael Marinaro went into last season with high expectations. They came out of it with a more confident mindset, one that has them fully embracing the fact that they are now one of the best pairs teams in the world.

Though it was not known at the time, the 2020 World Junior Championships wound up being the final event on the 2019-2020 figure skating calendar. Many of these young stars are heading to the senior ranks next season, with the ultimate goal of earning a place on their respective national teams to compete at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing, China.

To say it has been a tumultuous year for Vincent Zhou would be an understatement. He had hoped to carry the momentum of his bronze medal triumph at 2019 Worlds into his summer preparations. However, a series of injuries and a move across the country to begin his freshman year at Brown University derailed that plan.

Russia’s Daniil Gleikhengauz  competed in singles and ice dance, but enjoyed little success on the frozen stage. However, he found his calling on the other side of the boards as a coach and choreographer and is now part of one of the most successful coaching teams in the world for singles skaters.

When your parents were successful competitive skaters who now coach, the chances are high that donning a pair of skates will be one of the first things you do. That is what happened to Maxim Naumov, but it was not love at first sight.
