International Figure Skating

Ice Star 2020 – Minsk

Belarus will host its annual competition, 2020 Ice Star, Oct. 29 – Nov. 1 at the Olympic Arena in Minsk. The event is open to senior, junior and advanced novice skaters. There are currently six men, 10 ladies, two ice dance and one pairs team slated to compete. Though not a major international — or a Challenger Series event this season — it is good to see there are seven skaters/teams from Belarus on the rosters, along with competitors from Armenia, Cyprus, Estonia, Israel and Serbia.

Some of the elite athletes that train with Russian coach Alexei Mishin are slated to compete. Mikhail Kolyada, Sofia Samodurova, Anastasiia Guliakova and Evgeni Semenenko are on the rosters. Elizaveta Tuktamysheva was also on the ladies roster but she is dealing with a shoulder injury and is out of this competition. Her coach, Alexei Mishin, explained that her shoulder had popped but she was ″little by little getting into shape.″ Her next scheduled competition is the Grand Prix Rostelecom Cup in November.

Kévin Aymoz has withdrawn as have the other French competitors due to the lockdown in France. Georgia′s Morisi Kvitelashvili was scheduled to make his international season debut at this competition but he also withdrew — which organizers only learned when he did not take the ice for the short program when his name was called.

Kolyada will have no contest in winning the men′s title (short program). Samodurova should also claim top spot, but it will be interesting to see who steps up to the plate and captures the steps of the podiums.
