The 2022 Grand Prix Series opens with Skate America in Norwood, Massachusetts, Oct. 21-23.
The young American Ilia Malinin, the victor at the 2022 U.S. International Figure Skating Classic where he made history by landing the first clean quad Axel in competition, will be the man to beat. South Korea′s Jun-Hwan Cha and fan favourite Donovan Carrillo of Mexico are also slated to compete. Japan′s Yuma Kagiyama has withdrawn from the Grand Prix Series due to an ankle injury. Kévin Aymoz of France also withdrew from this competition due to an ankle injury.
Kaori Sakamoto of Japan, the reigning World champion, leads the way in the women′s field. The reigning World junior champion, Isabeau Levito, will make her senior Grand Prix debut in Norwood. She will be joined by Gracie Gold and Amber Glenn.
Madison Chock and Evan Bates of the U.S., the 2022 World bronze medalists, will be the team everyone will be chasing in the ice dance discipline. Japan′s Kana Muramoto and Daisuke Takahashi will make their international Grand Prix debut in Norwood, the first for the team outside of their homeland.
Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier of the U.S., the reigning World champions, are the odds-on favorites to take the pairs title. Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps of Canada, the 2022 Nebelhorn Trophy champions have a good shot at landing on the podium.
No Challenger Series event is scheduled for this week.
There is no TV coverage of this event in Canada. NBC will air the rhythm dance and women’s short program on its main network on Oct. 22 from 3-6 p.m. For specialty channels such as Peacock, USA Network and E! please check online or local listings.
