Gdańsk, Poland, will host the first of two back-to-back competitions Sep. 29-Oct. 1. This city most recently hosted Junior Grand Prix competitions in 2017 and 2021. All four disciplines will be contested.
Following the cancellation of the event in Yerevan, Armenia, skaters that were scheduled to compete there have been reassigned to other JGPs. The line ups currently list 29 men, 49 women, 10 pairs and 24 ice dance teams, so get ready for some long days.
The men′s line up includes Japan′s Nozomu Yoshioka, the champion in Ostrava, and Royoga Morimoto, the bronze medalist in Courchevel in Week 1 of the Series, along with Younghyun Cha of South Korea, the silver medalist in Courchevel. Francois Pitot of France, who is coached by Romain Ponsart, is back for a third season on the junior circuit.
Canada has assigned two men: Alec Guinzbourg, competing in his fourth JGP season and Rio Morito who will make his international debut in Gdańsk. The U.S. has assigned Michael Xie, fifth in Courchevel, Lucas Broussard and Joseph Klein to this competition.
In the women′s discipline, Japan′s Mao Shimada will be chasing a second win after her runaway victory in Ostrava. Clare Seo of the U.S. was unhappy with her fifth-place finish at her first event in Courchevel, so she will be in the hunt for a top three finish at this competition. Kara Yun, Canada′s lone entry, is slated to make her international debut.
The Australian team of Anastasia Golubeva and Hector Giatopolous Moore, the reigning World Junior silver medalists, headline the pairs event. The new Japanese team on the circuit, Haruna Murakami and Sumitada Moriguchi, were impressive in Ostrava where they finished in fourth place.
A battle is likely to unfold in the ice dance discipline with a number of teams aiming to secure a place at the Grand Prix Final. Those include Celina Fradji and Jean-Hans Fourneaux of France (silver in Courchevel), Phebe Bekker and James Hernandez (silver iron Ostrava), Nao Kida and Masaya Morita of Japan (bronze in Ostrava) and Mariia Pinchuk and Mykyta Pogorielov of Ukraine (bronze in Riga).
With the reigning World Junior bronze medalists from Canada, Nadiia Bashynska and Peter Beaumont, headlining the field, everyone will have to be at their best to claim a step on the podium. Also in the line up is the brother/sister duo of Laura Hegarty and Kevin Hegarty, who made history in Courchevel as the first team from the Republic of Ireland to compete in the discipline on the Junior Grand Prix circuit.
This competition takes place in the same time frame as the Challenger Series event, Nepela Memorial (link below).
