2022 Junior Grand Prix – Czech Republic

The second event of the 2022 Junior Grand Prix Series will play out in the beautiful city of Ostrava in the Czech Republic, Aug. 31-Sep. 3. This is the first of the four events in the Series that will include pairs.

There are currently 21 men, 35 women, eight pairs and 17 ice dance teams slated to compete, many of whom will make their international debuts at this competition.

The first event in Courchevel provided a glimpse into the wealth of young talent hitting the circuit this season, so expect to see more of the same high quality performances in Ostrava.

Aleksa Rakic of Canada, two young Americans, Kai Kovar and Maxim Zharkov, and Aleksandr Vlasenko of Hungary are among the experienced men returning to the junior circuit this season.

The women could bring the biggest surprises at this competition, with so many unknowns in the line up and only a few experienced skaters returning from previous seasons.

For just the second time in the history of the Junior Grand Prix Series, skaters from Vietnam will compete this season. Tran Khanh Linh, 17,  made her debut on the junior circuit in 2019. This will be just the second international competition of her budding career.

In ice dance, only a handful of teams have any international experience, so that event could produce a few surprises. A team from Vietnam is slated to make its international debut in Ostrava, likely a first for that nation. The Hanoi-based duo is coached by former Ukrainian skater Iaruk Pavlo.

For five of the eight pairs teams currently listed this will mark their first international competition. The three other teams from Canada, the Czech Republic and France, all made their respective debuts in 2021.

Host Mark Hanretty will fly solo at this competition as Ted Barton will be attending the Skate Canada High Performance Camp in Ontario this week.
