The 2022 Grand Prix assignments have been published. In total, 38 men, 44 ladies, 25 pairs and 34 ice dance teams representing 21 ISU Members will be invited. The maximum number of entries for each event is 12 in singles, eight in pairs and 10 in ice dance.
With ongoing sanctions as a consequence of the war in Ukraine, no Russian or Belarusian skaters will be competing on the Grand Prix circuit this season. The ISU cancelled Rostelecom Cup and Finland will now host the sixth event in Espoo. The Chinese Skating Association cancelled Cup of China in May. That competition has been replaced by the MK John Wilson Trophy, which will take place in Sheffield, Great Britain.
As is typical of a post-Olympic season, many places opened up due to retirements and those sitting out the Series, and with the sanctions in place, more opportunities became available, allowing for many new names on the rosters this year. The rosters are continually being updated for a number of reasons, one being that skaters are unable to obtain visas for certain countries.
Recent retirements include Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan, Canadian pairs skater Evelyn Walsh, the Ukrainian ice dance team of Oleksandra Nazarova and Maksym Nikitin and Ekaterina Ryabova of Azerbaijan.
The Series opens with Skate America, which will be hosted by the Skating Club of Boston at its venue in Norwood, Massachusetts, and concludes with the Espoo Grand Prix in Finland. The Grand Prix Final will take place in Torino, Italy — the host nation of the last Final that was held in 2019 — Dec. 8-11.
