2022 European Championships

2022 European

The 2022 European Championships take place in Tallinn, Estonia, Jan. 12-16. This is the second time this city has hosted the Championships in an Olympic year, with the first being in 2010. As this competition did not take place in 2021, the number of entries per nation this season is based upon the results of the 2020 European Championships. The line-ups currently list 34 men, 37 women, 22 pairs and 29 ice dance teams.

The Four Continents Championships will take place in Tallinn a few days after Europeans conclude. This will provide a unique opportunity for the skaters from Oceania, Mexico, the U.S. and Asian countries to attend this competition as spectators.

Russia is the only nation that will field a full complement in the four disciplines. This will be yet another showdown between that nation′s best skaters. While the 2022 Russian Championships were a battle, Europeans will be even tougher as skaters will need to have top placements at this competition to earn a berth on the 2022 Olympic team. On Jan. 9, the Russian federation advised Mikhail Kolyada had withdrawn due to injury. Andrei Mozalev has replaced him.

Italy has the second-highest number of entries and will field three men, two women, two pairs and two ice dance teams.

For a number of skaters/teams, this competition will determine who earns a trip to the 2022 Olympic Winter Games and who stays home. The Spanish ice dance team of Olivia Smart and Adrián Díaz are one of them. Europeans will mark the last of three mandated showdowns between them and Sara Hurtado and Kirill Khaliavin who are also vying for the lone spot Spain has in Beijing. Smart and Díaz lead after the first two competitions and need to finish ahead of Hurtado and Khaliavin in Tallinn to punch their ticket to Beijing.

Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron withdrew, opting to focus on their preparation for the upcoming Olympic Games.

Canadian fans can watch the competition on the ISU Skating Channel. CBC will not live stream this competition. The exhibition gala takes place on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. local time.
