The 2022 Canadian Junior Championships get underway on Mon., Jan. 10 with the rhythm dance and pairs short program.
Placements at this competition will determine assignments to the 2022 World Junior Championships and the Junior Grand Prix Series next season.
The junior competitions will be live streamed on the Skate Canada website (available worldwide — link below) and on the CBC.ca and CBC Gem networks.

The 2022 Canadian Championships take place in Ottawa, Ontario, Jan. 6-13. Skate Canada had planned to host the novice, junior and senior events under one roof at a combined Championships, but due to the escalating health crisis in Ontario the novice championships have been postponed. No fans will be permitted to attend the competition. The exhibition gala scheduled for Jan. 9 has been cancelled. You can download the Event Program HERE.
A total of 18 senior competitors in singles, 12 in pairs and 15 in ice dance qualified for the Championships through international competitions and/or 2022 Skate Canada Challenge which took place in early December.
It all comes down to the wire for those in contention for a place on the team that will compete at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games, Four Continents and the World Championships. The senior events kick off Jan. 7 with the short programs in all four disciplines.
Canada can field one woman, two men, two pairs and three ice dance teams to Beijing. Those berths were earned at the 2021 World Championships by Madeline Schizas, Keegan Messing, Kirsten-Moore Towers/Michael Marinaro and Evelyn Walsh/Trennt Michaud in pairs, and Piper Gilles/Paul Poirier and Laurence Fournier Beaudry/Nikolaj Sørensen in ice dance.
In a media call on Jan. 4, Vanessa James and Eric Radford announced they had been off the ice since before Christmas after contracting COVID-19, but subsequently confirmed they will compete at nationals despite having just four days of training.
We were informed on Friday night that Stephen Gogolev has withdrawn from the men′s event after receiving a positive COVID test on his arrival in Ottawa. We are told he is feeling fine, has no symptoms – he is very disappointed he will not be able to compete this weekend. Keegan Messing′s luggage along with his skates was lost by an airline on his journey from Alaska to Ottawa. On Thursday he practiced in a pair of white skates. His own skates were delivered to him on Thursday evening.
The junior and senior competitions will be live streamed on the Skate Canada website (available worldwide — link below) and on the CBC.ca and CBC Gem networks. Portions of the senior competition will air on the CBC television network on Sat., Jan. 8 and Sun. Jan. 9.
The 2022 Canadian Olympic team will be announced on Sun., Jan. 9 at 12:00 p.m. EST. This announcement will be live streamed on the Skate Canada website.
