The 2021 Warsaw Cup, the penultimate event of the Challenger Series, takes place Nov. 18–21. All four disciplines will be contested. As with the Challenger competition in Austria, the rosters in Poland boast high numbers: 32 men, 30 women, 20 pairs and 22 ice dance teams.
In the men′s field, Daniel Grassl of Italy, Russia′s Petr Gumennik and Ilia Yablokov, the winner of the Junior Grand Prix in Slovenia, are the top names in the field. Also on the roster are three Israeli men, two of which are no doubt in a battle for the lone Olympic spot earned by Alexei Bychenko at the 2021 World Championships. Koshiro Shimada of Japan returns to international competition for the first time in two years.
Canada′s Stephen Gogolev is scheduled to make his first competitive appearance in 21 months. HIs last competition was the Bavarian Open in February 2020. He will be joined by 2021 Junior Grand Prix finalist Wesley Chiu.
The women′s field includes Russia′s Maiia Khromykh, the 2021 Budapest Cup victor and runner up at the Italian Grand Prix; Ekaterina Kurakova of Poland, the silver medalist at 2021 Nebelhorn Trophy and two Americans, Lindsay Thorngren, who won the first Junior Grand Prix event in Courchevel, France earlier this season and is headed to the Junior Grand Prix Final, and Gabriella Izzo.
In the pairs discipline, Russia′s Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov lead the way. Possible podium contenders include Jessica Calalang and Brian Johnson of the U.S. and Laura Barquero and Marco Zandron of Spain. Canada′s Deanna Stellato and Maxime Deschamps will make their international debut at this competition.
The ice dance field includes Caroline Green and Michael Parsons of the U.S. and Russia′s Diana Davis and Gleb Smolkin. Kana Muramoto and Daisuke Takahashi will make their Challenger Series debut in Warsaw. The duo finished sixth at 2021 NHK Trophy, one spot and 7.30 points ahead of reigning Japanese champions Misato Komatsubara and Tim Koleto, who were also assigned to this competition but have withdrawn.
This competition overlaps with the Grand Prix Internationaux de France.
