The 2021 JGP Poland will play out in the beautiful city of Gdańsk, Sep. 29-Oct. 2. This is the second of the four events that will include a pairs competition. There are currently 72 skaters/teams slated to compete: 22 men, 28 women, seven pairs and 15 ice dance teams.
As noted in previous posts, the Japan Skating Federation will not field any singles skaters to the Junior Grand Prix competitions this season due to the quarantine requirements when returning home.
Edward Appleby of Great Britain, the bronze medalist in week two in Courchevel, will go up against two Russian men: Gleb Lutfullin and Egor Rukhin, who finished first and second, respectively, at the JGP in Krasnoyarsk. The U.S. will also field two men: William Annis, the bronze medalist in Slovakia and Jacob Sanchez, who will make his international debut following an impressive outing at the 2021 Cranberry Cup International where he finished third. Canada has no entries slated for this event.
Veronika Zhilina of Russia, the gold medalist in Slovakia, was assigned to this competition, but is now out of action with a torn ligament. She has been replaced by Elizaveta Kulikova, who finished fourth in Krasnoyarsk. Sofia Akatieva, who won the competition in Krasnoyarsk with a record-setting score, has quads and a triple Axel in her arsenal. Two U.S. women have been assigned — Mia Kalin, seventh in Slovakia, and Clare Seo, the bronze medalist at the first event in Courchevel. Canada′s Catherine Carle will make her JGP debut at this event.
In pairs, a trio of Russian teams are on the roster: Ekaterina Chikmareva and Matvei Ianshenkov and Ekaterina Petushkova and Evgenii Malikov, who finished first and third, respectively, in Krasnoyarsk, and Polina Kostiukovich and Aleksei Briukhanov the bronze medalists in their debut as a team in Slovakia. Canada and the Czech Republic are each fielding one team, while the U.S. is sending two.
Ice dance duos from 10 nations are currently scheduled to compete. Top teams in this event are Russia′s Irina Khavronina and Dario Crisano, the 2020 Youth Olympic Games champions, who won in Krasnoyarsk, and Isabella Flores and Dimitry Tsarevsky of the U.S., silver medalists in week two in Courchevel.
French Masters and the Japan Open also take place this weekend (see Competition Calendar link below). No Challenger Series or Cup of Russia events are scheduled this week.
