Due to an unprecedented number of skaters/teams that registered for this event, the Finnish Skating Federation has extended the 2021 Finlandia Trophy Espoo by one day. The competition takes place Oct. 7–10. Audience restrictions were removed on Oct. 1, allowing many more spectators to attend.
The line-ups for this event include some of the top names in the sport with a total of 87 skaters/teams slated to compete.
Headlining the women′s competition are a trio of Russians: Elizaveta Tuktamysheva, Kamila Valieva and Alena Kostornaia; two Americans, Karen Chen and Amber Glenn, and Canada′s Madeline Schizas.
The men′s event will be a battle. The U.S. is fielding two skaters, Jason Brown and Camden Pulkinen; Keegan Messing of Canada; Russia′s Mikhail Kolyada, Evgeni Semenenko and Dmitri Aliev, and a host of fan favorites that includes Mexico′s Donovan Carrillo.
In the pairs discipline, there are 15 teams currently slated to compete, four of which ranked top 10 at the 2021 World Championships. Anastasia Mishina and Alexander Galliamov, the reigning World champions, will be joined by training mates Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov; Canada is fielding two teams: Kirsten Moore-Towers and Michael Marinaro and Vanessa James and Eric Radford; Ashley Cain-Gribble and Timothy LeDuc and Jessica Calalang and Brian Johnson will represent the U.S.
Likewise in ice dance, there are 20 teams in the line up, headlined by Madison Chock and Evan Bates of the U.S. who will be joined by Christina Carreira and Anthony Ponomarenko. French stars Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron will contest their first Challenger Series event in four years. (The duo won Finlandia Trophy in 2017). Alexandra Stepanova and Ivan Bukin of Russia have withdrawn leaving no Russian teams in the line up. Other top duos include Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson of Great Britain and Juulia Turkkila and Matthias Versluis, the 2021 Nebelhorn Trophy champions.
Spain is fielding two teams, Sara Hurtado and Kirill Khaliavin and Olivia Smart and Adrián Díaz. This will be the first of three match-ups that will ultimately determine which team will be awarded the lone spot Spain has in Beijing and at the 2022 World Championships.
This competition overlaps with the Junior Grand Prix event in Linz, Austria.
