International Figure Skating

2021 Challenger Series

The 2021 Challenger Series opens with Lombardia Trophy in Bergamo, Italy, Sep. 10-12 and concludes with Golden Spin of Zagreb in early December.

After an abbreviated Challenger Series in 2020 that few skaters outside the hosting nations attended, this year should see a goldmine of talent at many of the competitions, as eligible skaters look to get mileage on their programs and feedback from international judging panels before heading onto the Grand Prix circuit.

We expect to see a lot of new faces on the Challenger Series stages this year with many junior stars from the 2019 campaign moving into the senior ranks for the Olympic season.

Canada and the U.S. will host a Challenger Series event in alternating years going forward. In 2021, U.S. Figure Skating will host the International Figure Skating Classic (a senior B competition this year) at the Skating Club of Boston’s facility in Norwood, Massachusetts, Sep. 15-19. This event takes place the same weekend as Autumn Classic International.

Nebelhorn Trophy, the third event of the 2021 Challenger Series, is the final qualifying competition for the 2022 Olympic Winter Games. With only 20 places available across the four disciplines, the competition in Oberstdorf will be fierce. The judges′ draw for the Olympic Games will also take place at this competition.

The Challenger Series, which was introduced during the 2014-2015 season, has proven to be successful in so many ways. Now in its eighth season, the Series provides opportunities for skaters who do not qualify for Grand Prix assignments to earn World Standing Points, along with the potential to win prize money at the end of the season.
