2020 European Championships

The 2020 European Championships take place in Graz, Austria, Jan. 20-26. This year marks the 112th anniversary of this prestigious competition.

Though Austria has not produced any Olympic, European or World champions in the modern era, it has a rich history in figure skating dating back to the early 1920s. The most successful skater to ever come out of Austria was Karl Schäfer, who dominated in his era, winning two Olympic titles (1932, 1936), seven consecutive World Championships (1930-1936) and eight consecutive European crowns (1929-1936). Trixi Schuba closed out Austria′s golden era of skating with her victory at the 1972 Olympic Winter Games.

The 2020 European Championships take place the same week as the 2020 U.S. Championships.

Following the results of 2019 Europeans, Russia is the only nation that earned a full complement (three skaters/teams) in all four disciplines. Italy has three spots in men and pairs, and France has three places in ladies, pairs and ice dance.

New champions will be crowned in three disciplines, with French ice dancers Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron the only returning gold medalists from 2019.

The trio of Russian ladies — Alena Kostornaia, Anna Shcherbakova and Alexandra Trusova — will likely be unchallenged in their quest to claim the three steps of the podium.

The men′s event is wide open. Kévin Aymoz of France and Russia’s Dmitri Aliev are the top-ranked skaters in a field of 35. In pairs, given the results of the first half of the season, a trio of Russian teams will likely be in a battle for top honors.

France and Germany are the only nations with judges on all four panels. Russia will have no judge on the ladies or men′s panels.

The competition will be live-streamed worldwide on the ISU Skating Channel (link below) except in countries with TV/online rights holders.
