2018 Nebelhorn Trophy takes place Sep. 26-29 in Oberstdorf, Germany. One of the oldest competitions in figure skating, Nebelhorn celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.
A total of 44 athletes are currently slated to compete in Oberstdorf: 10 men, 16 ladies, nine pairs and nine dance teams.
Canada′s Keegan Messing will go up against Alexander Majorov of Sweden and America′s Alexei Krasnozhon.
After not being allowed to leave Russia to compete at Ondrej Nepela Trophy due to her parental consent paperwork being out of date, Alina Zagitova is headed to Nebelhorn Trophy. She is the only Russian lady assigned to this competition. Her main challengers will be Marin Honda and Mai Mihara of Japan, Loena Hendrickx of Belgium and Mariah Bell of the U.S.
Alexa Scimeca Knierim and Chris Knierim of the U.S. are best bets to capture gold in this relatively inexperienced pairs field. Deanna Stellato and Nathan Bartholomay are last minute additions to the roster. The American duo placed second at Ondrej Nepela, but as there were only four teams competing at that event no World Standing points were awarded. Five teams is the minimum required by the ISU.
In ice dance, Canada’s Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier are the highest-ranked team and should have no problem claiming their first Challenger Series title this season. Two American teams will also be vying for a place on the podium: Rachel Parsons and Michael Parsons (second at 2018 Lombardia Trophy) and Christina Carreira and Anthony Ponomarenko (second at 2018 U.S. International Classic).
Aljona Savchenko and Bruno Massot will perform in the exhibition gala on Saturday evening.
The annual exams for ISU judges will take place during this competition.
As part of its anniversary celebrations, there will be an historical exhibition of Nebelhorn Trophy at Oberstdorf House from Sep. 25-Sep. 29. Admission is free.
