2018 Asian Open Trophy, the first event of the 2018 Challenger Series, takes place at the Imperial World Ice Skating Arena in Bangkok, Thailand, Aug. 1 – 5.
As per the ISU rules, an International Competition must include entries in at least three disciplines from a minimum of 10 different ISU Members, all disciplines combined. In addition, the minimum number of entries per discipline are as follows:
- Ladies/Men: minimum of eight (8) entries each, from at least four (4) ISU Members;
- Pairs Skating: minimum of five (5) entries from at least three (3) ISU Members;
- Ice Dance: minimum of six (6) entries from at least four (4) ISU Members.
As there are only two pairs teams competing at this competition — Peng Cheng and Yang Jin (China) and Tae Ok Ryom and Ju Sik Kim (PRK) — this category at the Asian Open 2018 will not be considered an International Competition since the minimum number of entries required for the Challenger Series was not reached.
As well as the pairs team, North Korea has entered one man and an ice dance team in this event.

2018 CHALLENGER SERIES
The ISU Challenger Series is an International Figure Skating Series, introduced during the 2014/15 season. Through ISU support, the objective is to ensure the proper and consistent organization and conduct of up to ten (10) International Competitions linked together within the ISU Challenger Series. The Series gives adequate opportunities for many Skaters to compete at the international senior level and earn World Standing Points. The Series also increases the opportunity for Officials to officiate at an international level.
To be considered for the Challenger Series, the competition must have at least three disciplines and a minimum of entries per discipline.
The ISU Council reiterates that being mindful that the ISU support towards the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating is restricted to a limited group of organizing ISU Members, to a limited number of Skaters and to a limited number of Officials, the ISU Council agreed to financially support a restricted group of identified ISU Members traditionally staging International Figure Skating Competitions being part of the ISU Event Calendar.
This ISU support has the objective to ensure the proper and consistent organization and conduct of up to ten (10) International Competitions linked together within the ISU Challenger Series in Figure Skating giving adequate opportunities for many Skaters to compete at the international senior level and earn World Standing Points and to increase the opportunity for Officials to officiate at an international level.
