Team Canada 2018 was announced on Sun. Jan. 14 in Vancouver at the conclusion of the Canadian Championships.

OLYMPIC ATHLETES FROM RUSSIA

Pursuant to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decision that ice dancer, Ivan Bukin, the son of the 1988 Olympic ice dance champion, Andrei Bukin, and pairs skater Ksenia Stolbova would not be invited to the 2018 Olympic Winter Games, the Russian Figure Skating Federation (RFSF) replaced both teams on its Olympic Athletes from Russia roster. Bukin, Stolbova and their respective partners (Alexandra Stepanova and Fedor Klimov) were invited to join the approved athletes at a training camp in Fukuoka, Japan on Jan. 27 but declined, stating they would use the time to prepare for the World Championships in March.

The IOC does not make public the reasons behind its decisions.

According to Russian news sources, Stolbova and Bukin are challenging the IOC in the Switzerland Civil Court. “The lawyers have received powers of attorney from Stolbova and Bukin. It was decided to challenge the non-admission to the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang in the civil court of Switzerland. They will not apply to the Court of Arbitration for Sport,” RFSF president Alexander Gorshkov explained.

In an interview with the TASS news agency, revered Russian coach Alexei Mishin said he expects the ladies to claim gold and silver but is not so sure about the other disciplines: 

“…we need to take two places, including gold. I think that gold and silver will be. In pairs skating we have chances from gold to bronze. For male singles, a good result will be a hit on the podium. Men will find it difficult to compete for a medal, although Kolyada has shown results close to this. I regard the chances of our boys getting on the podium as possible, but the gold medal seems to me in a fog.” Mishin expects the ice dance teams to rank at least two places lower than at the European Championships.

Team Russia 2018: At the conclusion of the national championships in late December, Russia announced the team that will compete at the 2018 European Championships in Moscow. The Olympic team will be announced following Europeans.

In yet another unexpected turn of events this weekend, South Korean rising star Jun-Hwan Cha came from behind at the national championships to win the event — and the Olympic race — and captured the sole men’s berth on his nation’s Olympic team.

Cha, 16, won the men’s singles at the Korea Figure Skating Championships, which doubled as the third and final leg of the Olympic trials with an overall score of 252.65 points. He earned 168.60 points for the free skate, adding to 84.05 points from Saturday’s short program.

With that, Cha won the qualification stage with 684.23 points, nipping Lee June-hyoung by 2.13 points. Lee had won the first two qualification events and held a 20.29-point lead over Cha heading into Sunday’s free skate.

Choi Da-bin, 17, and Kim Ha-nul, 15, will represent the host country next month in one of the Winter Games’ marquee events, after finishing one-two in the Olympic trials that wrapped up at Mokdong Ice Rink in Seoul on Sunday.

At the Korea Figure Skating Championships, the third and final leg of qualifying events, Choi finished with 190.12 points, for a total of 540.28. Kim scored 176.92 points over the weekend to reach 510.27 overall in the qualifying stage and grab the last spot available for South Korea in the ladies’ singles.
